2019 Hall of Fame Banquet Recap

Many reconnections were made and cherished memories were shared at the Fourth Annual Hot Springs Bison Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet, held September 14 at the Mueller Civic Center. The celebration also included a Hall of Fame Walk at Woodward Field prior to the Homecoming game.

Three individuals — Don Turbiville, David Tays (posthumously), and Mickey Dennis — were honored, along with the 1996 and 1997 back-to-back state champion girls track and field teams.

Turbiville reflected on how athletics shaped his life and reminded attendees that their actions can leave a lasting impact on others. Tays was remembered by his sister, Dee Dee Johnson, not only for his athletic success across multiple sports, but also for his humility and strong character. Dennis was recognized for his leadership, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to his teammates’ success above personal accolades.

The championship track teams were introduced by former assistant coach Cheryl Huddleston, who paid tribute to the late Coach Dave Scott and his remarkable ability to bring out the best in his athletes. Team members Genevieve Dement Osborn and Tawnya Doering Strauser spoke about the depth, unity, and bond that defined their teams. They also recalled the unforgettable moment when Coach Scott waved his hat to signal they had secured the state title — a memory that continues to bring joy to this day.
